I went into Path of Exile 2 expecting something familiar with a few shiny upgrades. That's not what it is. This game feels like a real attempt to rethink the formula, not just polish it. The old loot-chasing hook is still there, sure, and finding something big still gives you that little rush, whether it's a weapon upgrade or a piece of currency like a Divine Orb. But almost everything around that loop feels different. Movement has weight now. Fights ask more from you. Builds aren't handled the same way either. It's bold, and honestly, that's why the rough edges stand out so much.

    Movement changes everything
The biggest shock for me was how active the game feels. WASD movement sounds like a small feature on paper, but once you're in the middle of a messy fight, it completely changes your instincts. Add the dodge roll and suddenly you can't just stand there, eat damage, and melt the screen. You've got to move with purpose. You dodge late, you get clipped. You overcommit, you pay for it. That part actually feels great when it clicks. It gives combat a bit more tension. A bit more intention. At the same time, it also means slower encounters feel even slower, because you're doing more work for kills that don't always come fast enough.

The new skill system is a real upgrade
One change I genuinely love is the gem setup. Tying sockets to skill gems instead of gear is such a cleaner idea. In the first game, chasing the right links could feel miserable, especially when a good item dropped with the wrong setup. Here, there's more freedom to test stuff without your entire build being held hostage by one chest piece. That said, the system isn't magically solving every problem. You still hit that wall where your build idea looks good in theory, then the gear just doesn't show up, or your damage starts falling behind. When that happens during the campaign, the excitement can turn into a slog pretty quickly.

    Where players are pushing back
This is where most of the community noise is coming from, and I can't really blame them. Enemy health often feels overtuned, especially in stretches where your build hasn't come together yet. You end up spending too long on fights that don't feel dangerous, just drawn out. That's a rough combo. A lot of veteran ARPG players are used to momentum, and PoE2 sometimes seems determined to interrupt it. There's also the issue of build variety not fully opening up early enough. When players talk about the campaign dragging, they're not just asking for things to be easier. They want the game to feel responsive to effort, and right now that balance still seems a bit off.

    Why I'm still interested
Even with those issues, I keep wanting to log back in. The atmosphere is excellent, the world has real weight to it, and the story presentation is far better than most games in this space. More importantly, the developers don't seem tone-deaf. They've acknowledged pacing complaints, and that matters. If they keep tuning the weak spots, this could become something special rather than just interesting. For players who like digging into systems, comparing builds, and even checking outside resources like U4GM for game currency or item support while planning their next character, there's already plenty here to chew on. It's uneven, no question, but it also feels alive in a way a lot of ARPGs don't.
